A classroom kit for up to 24 students!
Explore the science of superabsorbent polymers with an amazing, non-toxic powder that erupts into an amazingly realistic drift of “snow” when you add water.
Packed into a small amount of the dry powder is an amazing reaction. Insta-Snow® is a compact, superabsorbent polymer that quickly (in seconds) “drinks” up lots of water and expands to 100 times its original size. The reaction is very fast and very visual which makes it ideal for a variety of age and ability levels. You’ll easily capture and keep the attention and wonder of younger students, who gain confidence as they do the experiment themselves. Students working at an intermediate level can learn about the scientific method as they create hypotheses and then plan and carry out experiments to test their theories (will Grow Snow also work with other liquids such as milk, soda, salt water, or oil?) Older students can perform more exact measurements and follow through with calculations to determine things like volume or degree of expansion.
The Grow Snow classroom kit works well with a variety of teaching styles and will incorporate easily into your lesson plans. The kit is also an excellent introduction to a number of principles, including science in general, chemical reactions, molecules, polymers, the water cycle, environmental studies, and much more. The Classroom Connections section of the Teacher activity guide provides ideas to get you started with curriculum integration and extension projects.
Above all, the Grow Snow kit will introduce your students to the joy and wonder of science in a positive, memorable way. This truly is a remarkable reaction, and we guarantee that both you and your students will be amazed.
The Grow Snow classroom kit contains enough material for 24 individual experiments, including the zip-bags in which the “snow” can be transported home.
Let the learning fun begin!

ABOUT THE COMPONENTS IN THIS KIT:
Superabsorbent polymers like Insta-Snow® are mainly cross-linked copolymers of acrylic acid and sodium acrylate. This polymer is a non-toxic derivative of sodium polyacrylate and is safe to use around children and pets. However, it can be irritating to the eyes and to nasal membranes if inhaled either as a dry powder or when hydrated.
Make sure your students understand that good scientists always keep their experiments away from their eyes, nose, mouths, pets, and babies. Use common sense when working with any chemical. If eye contact or ingestion occurs, use generous amounts of water for washing and drinking. The dry powder and the gelled material can be disposed of in the trash or outside (it’s great for the lawn or around plants). Insta-Snow® is very slippery when wet so keep it off of all walking surfaces and clean up any spills immediately.
